Recipients of the 2017 Good Neighbours Awards Announced

On the evening of May 11, 2017, the United Way of the Lower Mainland presents the Association of Neighbourhood Houses BC (ANHBC) Good Neighbours Awards for 2017.

The Good Neighbours Awards ceremony is ANHBC’s way of recognizing local heroes who make neighbourhoods better places to live. One outstanding British Columbian who personifies ANHBC’s sense of community is also recognized. The award winners will be honoured beginning at 7:30 pm on Thursday, May 11, at a dinner and celebration at Fraserview Hall in Vancouver, BC.

This year’s British Columbia Good Neighbour Award winner is Sean R. Lauer. Lauer is an academic, a community volunteer and an outstanding champion for neighbourhood houses. He has dedicated many years and extensive knowledge to help support and strengthen the strong network of neighbourhood houses in Vancouver (see bio attached).

Other award categories are the Youth Award, Neighbourhood House Award and Corporate Award. The recipient list is attached.

ANHBC hosts the Good Neighbours Awards each year as a celebration of the spirit of volunteerism and neighbourliness. Most neighbourhood houses in the region participate. ANHBC operates seven of the 15 neighbourhood houses in the Lower Mainland, as well as an outdoor camp, providing needed community services in 50 locations. The organization opens its doors to over 270,000 individual visits every year; connecting neighbours, reducing isolation, welcoming newcomers and making a difference in thousands of lives. From welcoming isolated seniors to cook and eat together in Mount Pleasant, to offering life-changing leadership development to children and youth at the Sasamat Outdoor Centre, ANHBC builds strong communities throughout the region, neighbour by neighbour.

This year ANHBC Good Neighbours Awards are presented by United Way of the Lower Mainland. United Way promotes a vision of healthy communities and works side-by-side with neighbourhood houses, strengthening these organizations, providing financial support and celebrating outstanding volunteers.

The other generous sponsors of the event are Deloitte Canada, Shaw Sabey and Associates, Sean Moore (CIBC), Norton Rose Fulbright, Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel and Ecclesiastical Insurance Canada.
