ANHBC Statement on Day for Truth & Reconciliation

In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) calls to action, the Government of Canada is now recognizing September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, dedicated to remembering and honouring victims of residential schools and their families and marked by a federal statutory holiday, applying to federal offices and federally regulated workplaces. The BC provincial government’s Employment Standards Act remains unchanged. At the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of BC (ANHBC) we are committed to taking an active stance to work towards decolonizing our practices. To this end, we will honour the TRC’s recommendation and will be recognizing September 30 as a statutory holiday for our neighbourhood houses, camp and central office.

As an organization that has navigated over 125 years of Canadian history, we recognize the importance of listening, learning and acting as allies to our community members. As we learn about our history, and complicity in the oppression of Indigenous People, we strive to make positive changes within our organization and neighbourhoods we serve. At ANHBC, we are committed to Truth and Reconciliation, decolonization and anti-racism.

The ANHBC neighbourhood houses, camp and central office will be honouring Orange ShirtDay leading up to and beyond September 30th. We invite you to connect with the neighbourhood house closest to you, either in person or online, follow ANHBC Facebook to learn more, and wear orange on September 30.

“I want to release what is inside of me. All that fear. All that anger. All that pain. I want all of Canada to know why we are the way we are today.”
